Pregnancy Weight Gain: How Much is Healthy?

Weight gain during pregnancy is entirely normal and highly essential for the healthy development of your baby. However, gaining too much or too little weight can lead to health complications for both the mother and the child. Our Pregnancy Weight Gain Calculator helps you determine your optimal weight gain range based on your body type before pregnancy.

How This Calculator Works

This tool follows the official guidelines set by the Institute of Medicine (IOM). The recommended weight gain depends entirely on your Body Mass Index (BMI) before you became pregnant. (If you aren't pregnant yet and want to check your general health, use our Standard BMI Calculator).

  • Underweight (BMI < 18.5): Recommended gain is 12.5 to 18 kg.
  • Normal Weight (BMI 18.5 - 24.9): Recommended gain is 11.5 to 16 kg.
  • Overweight (BMI 25.0 - 29.9): Recommended gain is 7 to 11.5 kg.
  • Obese (BMI ≥ 30.0): Recommended gain is 5 to 9 kg.

Note: If you are expecting twins, the recommended weight gain is significantly higher. Use the "Twins" option in the calculator above to see your customized range.

Where Does the Extra Weight Go?

Many mothers wonder why they need to gain 11-16 kg when the baby only weighs about 3-4 kg at birth. Here is a general breakdown of where the pregnancy weight actually goes:

Component Approximate Weight (kg)
Baby3.0 - 3.6 kg
Placenta0.7 - 1.4 kg
Amniotic Fluid0.9 - 1.4 kg
Uterus Enlargement0.
